The World’s Most Powerful Maelstrom!
Do you know what a Maelstrom is and how it works?
The Northern Lights are visible in Norway over the long winter nights.
The following extract from Wikipedia shows how they happen.
The aurora borealis (the Northern Lights) and the aurora australis (the Southern Lights) have always fascinated mankind, and people even travel thousands of miles just to see the brilliant light shows in the earth’s atmosphere. The auroras, both surrounding the north magnetic pole (aurora borealis) and south magnetic pole (aurora australis) occur when highly charged electrons from the solar wind interact with elements in the earth’s atmosphere. Solar winds stream away from the sun at speeds of about 1 million miles per hour. When they reach the earth, some 40 hours after leaving the sun, they follow the lines of magnetic force generated by the earth’s core and flow through the magnetosphere, a teardrop-shaped area of highly charged electrical and magnetic fields.
As the electrons enter the earth’s upper atmosphere, they will encounter atoms of oxygen and nitrogen at altitudes from 20 to 200 miles above the earth’s surface. The color of the aurora depends on which atom is struck, and the altitude of the meeting.
- Green – oxygen, up to 150 miles in altitude
- Red – oxygen, above 150 miles in altitude
- Blue – nitrogen, up to 60 miles in altitude
- Purple/violet – nitrogen, above 60 miles in altitude
How cold is it? How warm is it?
I have attached a link here to our Google Docs spreadsheet and will be emailing you with the login etc so that you can keep us all updated about the temperature in your country each week. If you want to, you can also add pictures or animoto films, but only if you have time to do this. The link is also available on the Blogroll to the right hand side where oiur school links are. All you have to do here is click the weather picture!
The first meeting in Blackpool.
Our first meeting was very interesting and we had the opportunity to meet to other members of the programm. Moreover,we began working on the plan for the project. We have already maken our Comenious board and flags, showing photos from the first meeting.Furthermore,we collected the temperature of each week, phrases, which were bult in Voki, special news for the common blog(Thessaloniki on the go). Also,we have taken pictures from the children, when they are comming to school, from their breakfast.Αll these will be published in few days.
Thanks to Andy and his team of St. Nicholas School for their hospitality and the time they speht with us.We hope to reciprocate the hospitality to all teams of comenious that will visit us next year.

We finish for Easter in England on 14th April for one week.
Vote on our first poll!
Welcome!
This blog is a central hub for the work of a group of teachers from around Europe who have come together to share, collaborate, to learn about each other’s schools and countries and to develop a sense of being European within their schools thanks to the Comenius project.
The group is looking at a day in the life of a child from each of our countries. The countries represented are:
Cyprus – Group Leader
Belgium
England
Greece
Iceland
Ireland
